Sharing Warmth Brings Safety Too
It is that time of year in South Africa when evenings arrive early and mornings come late, and when cold settles in the bones it doesn't lift until well after the sun finally rises. For most of us, this means reaching for a heater, pulling on a jacket, or wrapping up under a warm blanket.
For the teens growing up in the townships of Johannesburg and Cape Town, it means something else entirely. It means gathering around an imbawula (a tin can with holes punched around its sides), burning whatever can be found to stay warm. While it is dangerous to stand outside after dark, the real danger starts when someone brings the imbawula inside.
It’s the reason Infinite Family raises funds every year to provide each of our Net Buddies with a winter hoodie and if you read on, you’ll understand exactly how vital this is for their winter wellbeing. |
