South Africa is riding their third wave of intense Covid-19 infections. This time, the Delta variant – 50% more infectious than early strains – is making this wave even more dangerous than before. With less than 1% of the population vaccinated, this week the government raised the country’s restrictions to a Level 4 status. People may still go to work to support themselves, but recreational activities are off limits. Schools are also closing this week, two weeks early for their July break.  As South Africa has overcome two waves before, we expect our Net Buddies to be back online with their Video Mentors by the end of July. However, the Infinite Family Team isn’t slowing down while we wait. In addition to the ups and downs of Covid-19 waves and restrictions, our Net Buddies face an additional serious challenge: almost daily power outages called “load shedding.” Without lights, walking home after a wintry sunset at 5:30pm is especially dangerous. And of course, homework is impossible when candles are too expensive and kerosene burns their eyes.
