Winter is in full swing in South Africa and nighttime temps are frigid. If that wasn’t bad enough, without even a day’s warning, South Africa jumped from Level 2 to Level 6 “Load Shedding.” What does this mean exactly? Just as the coldest months of winter hit, our African teens experience at least 8 hours without electricity each day, that is, if they even had it to start with.
Many of our Net Buddies were already studying by candles or kerosene. Now, their families are forced to take even more dangerous actions to stay warm, including using an “imbawula” - an open flame barely contained in an open metal bucket like the one above - inside their homes.
We know this sounds almost impossible to imagine – bringing an open flame into a home -- especially when homes are packed as densely together as they are in the communities where our Net Buddies live. But it is a common practice in South Africa when there seems to be no other choice. Sadly, as a result children regularly die from carbon monoxide poisoning and/or home fires.
