Twin Ambition

Khayelitsha, outside Cape Town, isn’t the easiest place for a mother to bring up her sons but it’s always been the place the Mphanda* twins have called home and it’s where their dreams of a professional future were first seeded. And, now in their final year of High School, it’s where those big ambitions are beginning to take shape, thanks to the support and encouragement their Infinite Family Video Mentors. 

Thamsanqa* joined our program in 2021 and the relationship with his US-based mentor, Deena Boykin was a perfect match from Day 1. Meanwhile, Molope* joined Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy (VLCA) – an initiative aimed at equipping Khayelitsha teens with life skills through cycling - and only came on board this year when, he says, he decided he wanted the mentoring experience his twin was having and teamed up with Daniel Gallardo! Keep a Teen Free from Cold this Winter

Our Net Buddies are getting ready for winter in South Africa and it catches them by surprise every year! Not surprising when most of the year is hot, hot, hot but – boy – when the temperatures plummet it gets C-C-COLD! (Not to mention the searing rain and wind for our Cape Town teens.)

So, once again, the annual Global Giving Little x Little campaign is just in time to help us raise the funds we need to provide each Net Buddy with a cosy hooded sweater.

As you’ll know if you’ve been through a winter with us before, Global Giving pledges to match every donation up to $50 by half again! Which means a donation of $50 gets boosted to $75! AS LONG AS FUNDS LAST. We know from experience that the money pot empties quickly. So PLEASE if you’d like to keep a teen warm this winter, look out for out for the email that will be hitting your inbox next week and make a donation of any size you can. Human Rights for All, Right?

For all the historical injustices of South Africa’s apartheid past, one of the things it’s democratic Constitution has got absolutely right is its Bill of Rights, which legally entrenches the basic human rights of every human being. 

Marked every year on 21 March, to commemorate the shooting of 69 people at a protest in Sharpeville, Human Rights Day is a reminder of every South African’s right to Equality, Privacy, Human Dignity, Freedom of Expression and Religious Freedom. And, in a year when these basic protections are denied to so many, the day is set to be more poignant than ever.
