3rd Try Charm

At the age of six, Hope lost her mother and has since lived at Nkosi’s Haven, an orphanage that’s part of our Infinite Family. At twelve, she met her Video Mentor Nicole, who’s in the US. They’ve been together ever since. 

At eighteen, Hope passed Matric with a Bachelor’s Pass and applied to study medicine or dentistry. Sadly, a disappointing result in one critical exam ended that dream. Hope suddenly had an unwanted ‘gap year’.  

Undaunted, she used the time to course-correct, teaching herself how to braid hair and earn money while she reconsidered her future. In October 2024, she was offered a provisional place at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to study Nuclear Medical Technology, which she expected to be confirmed in January 2025. Hope had everything lined up regarding her scholarship. All she needed was the green light to enroll in her chosen course of study.

But it was NOT to be. 

Results are In!

As always, the most important metrics of our success - in preparing teens to succeed in school, work and life – are indicated in: the number of Net Buddies that choose to stay in high school to the end of 12^th Grade; the academic results they achieve; and the opportunities they lead to afterwards.

Once again, they have done themselves proud. Far outstripping the national average of South African school leavers who qualify for advanced education, 95% of our teens earned the opportunity to study for Diplomas and 84% have earned themselves a Batchelor’s qualification, entitling them to apply for university degrees. 

These are more impressive results than many better-resourced state schools in affluent parts of the country! Yet, while we’re overjoyed that almost all our teens have seen their hard work open doors to a brighter future, there have also been reminders of the toll that township living can take on even the most ambitious and focused students.

Two of our teens have wisely decided to return to school to improve their marks and rewrite and we’re proud of their determination to dust off their disappointment and keep striving for the goals they’ve set themselves.

How Do We Thank You?

• No mentorship program to let our teens know they are not alone in  their personal and academic struggles and that their futures matter.
• No LaunchPads to provide a safe space for conscientious youngsters to access the internet and study in peace. 
• Little prospect of staying in school and doing well enough to win a prized place at university and build a brighter, financially independent future for themselves and their families.
