Dear Net Buddies and Blazers,
How often do you long for someone from outside your world to arrive and fix things or make things easier for you – someone like a superhero?</p?
What characteristics would that character have?
What would they wear – would they be noticeable or blend in with the crowd?
Now read Mariah Carey’s song lyrics below.
There’s a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don’t have to be afraid
Of what you are
There’s an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
It’s a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold
You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don’t let anyone
Tear them away
Hold on
There will be tomorrow
In time
You’ll find the way
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
“Hero” by Mariah Carey
Does this song change your thoughts about needing someone else to make things better in your life?
What about you makes you capable of being your own superhero?
What can you do, like wear a certain shirt or put your hair a certain way – to remind yourself of your own super powers?
Write your answers down on a piece of paper and keep it until you can bring it to the LaunchPads.
1) Sometimes I just wish that someone would take me on an adventure.
2) They would be kind, brave, funny and adventurous.
3) They would blend in a crowd.
Hello, Elizabeth. Your written English seems to be quite good. Spelling, punctuation, sentence structure–you have got this. I would love to see you expand on your answers, though.
For example, what kind of adventure would you like to go on with a super hero? What are your strengths that others may see as “superpowers?” What feelings did Mariah Carey’s song bring out in you?
Since it is clear that you write well, I’d like to see you push yourself. Don’t play it safe. The clearest quality I picked up from your writing is your thirst for adventure. Right now–as a young student–you can start satisfying that thirst through what you choose to read and how you write about yourself. Reading and writing help us understand other people’s lives and also our own.
I look forward to your next piece of writing and wonder where you’re going to take us readers!
