Lesego lives in Alexandra Township. He’s in grade 10, with his sights set on Maths and Science, and he’s currently waiting — excitedly — to be matched with his Video Mentor.
He’s already found something special at Infinite Family. “I’ve learned how kind the staff is, and I can be myself as an extrovert without being judged or told that I’m too loud,” he told us.
When we asked Lesego what he’s hoping for in a mentor, his answer was thoughtful and clear. He’d love someone who can relate to his life. He’s looking for a mentor who is bubbly like him, who can help him plan his diary (aka calendar), and who he can talk to about how he spends his days and the choices he makes. More than anything, he wants support: someone to help him think through his future, manage his time, and navigate stress at school and at home.
Lesego also shared how much he values the free data and computers available at Infinite Family’s LaunchPad, which give him the tools to research for school and start exploring what’s possible for his future.
Stories like Lesego’s are why Infinite Family’s Video Mentoring program exists. Our teens come to us full of hope, curiosity, and questions about their future — and all they need is a consistent, caring adult on the other side of the screen.
Becoming a Video Mentor takes just 30 minutes a week. The process is simple and well-supported: complete an online application form, go through background, clearance, and consent process, schedule a 30 min phone conversation, provide two-character references, complete online/anytime training, and attend a final online live training session before you’re matched. Matching happens several times a year, aligned with South Africa’s school terms, so your Net Buddy is ready to connect with you as soon as you’re ready for them.
Teens like Lesego are waiting. Will you be the one he’s been hoping for?
