Every morning in Khayelitsha, Alexandra, and Johannesburg, our Net Buddies make a choice. They pack their bags, head to school, and later in the week, they sit down at a LaunchPad computer and connect with someone who believes in them — their Video Mentor.
That choice — repeated day after day — is the foundation of everything we do at Infinite Family.
Education as a Daily Act of Resilience
For our teens, going to school is not always simple. They navigate real-world pressures and challenges that many of their peers elsewhere never face. And yet they keep showing up. At Infinite Family, we see this daily resolve not as something to be pitied, but as something to be celebrated and strengthened. Our mission is to promote self-reliance — to support our Net Buddies in becoming resilient, responsible, and resourceful young adults who are ready for the world ahead.
School, we tell our teens, is one of the few places where their actions reliably make a difference in their favour. Good decisions in the classroom reduce uncertainty and open doors. And when our Net Buddies understand that, something shifts.
The Net Buddy and Video Mentor Relationship
At the heart of Infinite Family’s program is a weekly video conversation — a one-on-one connection between a South African teen and a caring adult from somewhere else in the world. Our Video Mentors come from 21 countries and 39 U.S. states. What they share is a commitment to showing up, week after week, for a young person who needs them.
The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult. Our Video Mentors fill that role for many of our Net Buddies — offering a trusted voice, a broader perspective, and the kind of steady encouragement that helps teens push through setbacks and keep going.
In these conversations, our teens don’t just get homework help (though they get that too). They learn that the adults they admire didn’t arrive at success easily — that most have stumbled, failed, and tried again. Hearing those stories is transformative. It tells our Net Buddies that they are not alone in their challenges, and that persistence is a skill that can be learned.
Net Buddy Anathi put it simply: “She helped me to be self-reliant. Indeed, I believe because of my Infinite Family mentor I succeed beyond my expectations.”
The Ripple Effect of Believing in a Teen
When our Net Buddies stay in school, improve their grades, and go on to earn tertiary qualifications, the impact doesn’t stop with them. Economic stability changes families. Families shape communities. Communities raise the next generation differently. Every Net Buddy who crosses that threshold becomes proof to the young people around them that it is possible — and that changes everything.
That’s why we talk about the generational ripple effect of supporting young people. The investment we make in one teenager today doesn’t just transform one life. It sends hope downstream.
