It’s all too easy for privileged communities to make the assumption that teens without access to first world resources and advantages have no prospects, no hope and no ability to succeed. And while it’s right that they face obstacles most kids in the North do not, we’re here to tell you that plenty of our teens share just the same passion, talent and grit to get ahead and they are fiercely capable.
Take Nyiko (16), Mapula (14) and Tshwelopele (15). They are all Net Buddies who live in Alexandra, which is reputed to be one of Johannesburg’s toughest places to grow up. Yet, despite the daily tightrope they walk, they all have the distinction of receiving High Achiever awards at school this term. (That is a BIG deal!)
We know how much they have to overcome to stay focused on their studies and achieve the ambitious goals they set themselves. As do their proud Video Mentors, Paula, Debbie, and Jagruti. The encouragement and guidance they share in their weekly online conversations adds some much-needed warmth and light … both to the teens who value having one-on-one time with an adult who really cares about them and their progress, and to the mentors who love getting to know them and support them in their life choices.
