A Mother’s Heart

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day in South Africa and to mark the celebration of those who mother and nurture all over the world, we’d like to share a heartfelt letter from, Nolufefe, the proud mother of twin sons who are part of our Infinite Family program. It arrived not long after her boys completed Matric (12th Grade), at the end of what she describes as “an emotional and exciting year for our family” that prepared them to step boldly into the next chapter of their lives. More than a letter of gratitude, it’s a call for other parents to help their children understand the importance of staying motivated and committed to their studies. And a beautiful reminder that, along with the hard work, discipline and sacrifice it takes for our Net Buddies to reach their goals, it is the support of a network of mentors that will help them reach their potential.

“As a mother, you always worry about whether your children will stay focused and make good choices, especially with the challenges young people face in our community. Seeing them grow into young men who are thinking seriously about their future has given me hope. It also feels like the beginning of a new chapter for all of us.

“Even now, after finishing matric, my sons still choose to go to the Launchpad each week for their video calls. That tells me everything. Young people do not continue showing up for something unless they feel supported, respected, and encouraged. I can see that these conversations motivate them and give them confidence. They feel heard, guided, and inspired to dream bigger. For me as a parent, it means a lot to know there are people who genuinely care about their future.

“Their mentors, Deena and Daniel, have been very supportive and consistent in my sons’ lives. They have encouraged them academically, emotionally, and personally. Sometimes children listen differently when advice comes from mentors who invest time in them and believe in their potential. My sons have learned about responsibility, confidence, communication, and setting goals through these relationships. Their mentors have helped them believe that their background does not have to limit their future.

“My biggest hope is that they continue believing in themselves and stay focused on their goals. I want them to become independent, successful, and happy young men who make positive choices and contribute to their community. Like any mother, I also have fears. Opportunities are not always easy to find, and there are many distractions and challenges facing young people today. I worry about disappointment, unemployment, and the pressures around them, but I pray they remain strong and continue surrounding themselves with positive influences.

“To other parents in our community, I would say this: programmes like Infinite Family and Velokhaya can truly change a young person’s life. They give children exposure, guidance, support, and opportunities they may not otherwise have access to. These programmes help young people build confidence, improve their communication skills, and see possibilities beyond their immediate environment. They also remind our children that there are people who believe in them and want to see them succeed. As parents, we cannot do everything alone, so having programmes and mentors like these makes a real difference.”
